Item #CC-0782 | 1556-1598 Seville 4 Escudos Pendant in 14K Bezel
Mint: Seville, Spain
Assayer: Square D – Melchor Damien
Ruler/Period: King Philip II
Grade: Jewelry – AU

Description: This is a stunning example of a Seville 4 escudos struck during the reign of Philip II. The details are sharp, the strike is well centered on the planchet, and the gold tone is wonderful. These coins were struck with the purity near 22K, as it was as close to pure as they could obtain at the time in the Spanish Empire. These coins are exceptionally rare, not only for their age and beauty, but due to the fact that so few were minted in this denomination. Far more 2 escudos were struck than 4s. The planchet size is also close to what the 8 escudos were struck on. The planchets are close to the same size, however the 4 escudos are half the weight, around 13.5g, while the 8 escudos are thicker and heavier at around 27g in weight.  This example came to us already mounted in it’s 14K bezel, which is marked several times inside the bail at the top of the mount. If you are looking for a larger gold pendant, but don’t want to spend the money on an 8 escudos, this is the piece for you!
