Description: A great example of the many reales recovered from the shipwreck off Mozambique. Likely minted in Seville, this 8 reales still shows nice details on both sides, as well as a “grade 2” sticker noting it is a nicer example than most.

The São José was a Portuguese carrack that sank in 1622 off the coast of Mozambique while en route from Lisbon to Goa, India. The ship, heavily laden with goods, included a substantial amount of silver coins, some bound for trade in Asia. It was caught in a powerful storm near the treacherous reefs around Mozambique Island, causing it to break apart and sink along with most of its valuable cargo.

The São José wreck remained undiscovered for centuries until it was located by modern archaeologists and divers. Among the treasures recovered were silver reales minted in Spain and Spanish America, reflecting the vibrant and complex trade network between Europe, Africa, and Asia during the 17th century. These coins, often stamped with the marks of Spanish mints, were sought for their value and reliability, circulating widely across the global trade routes of the time. The São José discovery has contributed valuable artifacts and insights into Portugal’s role in early global commerce and the perilous voyages undertaken by explorers and traders of the era.
