Description: This is an extremely rare and superbly preserved example of a Lima 8 reales minted by none other than Diego de la Torre. Cobs minted by Diego de la Torre are highly sought after as they are known to be of far higher quality than most other Spanish cobs minted at other mints. This specimen is the finest example graded by NGC and PCGS and some would argue that this coin belongs in a museum.
The obverse of the coin is superbly struck, well centered and displays a full shield, star of lima mint mark, assayer’s initial, and most of the legend. The reverse has an almost perfectly centered cross with castles and lions, quatrefoil, and most of the legend. Both sides of this coin are bathed in a beautiful frosty mint luster as it would have looked the day it was made.
You just don’t see Lima cobs that look anything close to this one and if you want to own a real piece of Spanish Colonial treasure, this is it.
