Description: A spectacular 8 reales from arguably the most beautiful period in Spanish coinage, the 16th century. This is a stunning and naturally toned example that is circa 1588. King Philip II reign saw gorgeous coins with spectacular detail on them. This example’s only flaw is the soft spot from the strike on either side which obscures the assayers mark. While I am certain it is a “square D” assayer, it cannot be seen, thus the variety of this coin is placed to that year. A full crown atop a nearly complete shield on the obverse is stunning! The reverse, with a small flat spot from striking, radiates a sharp strike showing each intended detail of the die. A wonderful surviving example!
