Description: This is a wonderful surviving example of a Potosi 8 reales from the “Atocha Era”. Despite a small spot of what appears to be verdigris at the 4 o’clock position on the obverse, the coin has just about everything you would want from a Spanish Colonial cob. The obverse has a boldly struck and well centered Habsburg shield, a portion of the crown above the shield, the assayer’s initial and the mint mark.

The reverse of this coin is simply outstanding and has the appearance of an AU coin. The cross is well centered, the castles and lions are strongly struck, and the quatrefoil surrounding the cross is nicely defined.

It is easy to see why this coin was one of the prized possessions of the Rutherford collection.
