Description: Here is a nice example of a less-seen denomination from this time period struck at the legendary Potosi mint in Bolivia. This 4 reales has a full weight, nice full shield atop a partial shield, and an attractive cross on the reverse. Most of the coins from this time have been cleaned at some point, so the details grade assigned to this coin is not a draw back. It is a wonderful surviving example, unblemished or damaged.
The Spanish silver mine and mint at Potosí became one of the most important economic engines of the Spanish Empire after the discovery of silver at Cerro Rico in 1545. Vast quantities of silver were extracted, fueling Spain’s global power and trade for centuries. To process this wealth locally, the Casa de la Moneda de Potosí was established in 1572, striking millions of silver coins—especially the famous 8 reales—that circulated worldwide as the first truly global currency. Despite its immense output, corruption and debasement at the mint in the 17th century led to major scandals and reforms. By the 18th century, declining ore quality reduced production, but Potosí’s legacy endured as a symbol of both extraordinary wealth and immense human cost.
