Description: This is a rare mint state example of a two reales minted in Toledo, Spain. Typically smaller denominations of Spanish coinage from this period were heavily circulated as they were regularly used for everyday commerce. This specimen displays not only the assayers initial, mint mark, and denomination, but also boasts of an almost complete shield and cross and the first two digits of the date as “16”. The toning on this coin is original and still reveals flashy hints of luster from the day it was minted.
The fact that this coin survived in uncirculated condition for over 400 years is quite remarkable.
