Ruler/Period: King Philip IV

Description: This 8 reales is a fantastic example with a partial “3” date, as well as two test cuts on the reverse. Test cuts were done primarily in the Asian markets by merchants verifying that a coin from the Spanish Empire was truly silver and not a copper or lead forgery. The obverse is complete with a beautiful shield, a partial date, and the mint and assayers marks. The date can only be 1643, 1653 or 1663 as those are the years the assayer was at the mint, ending in their time in 1665. Additionally, when you flip the coin over, both sides are perfectly aligned, a rare feature where most sides are not lined up.
