Description: A fantastic example of a 4 reales (debased to 3.75 reales) recovered from the wreck of the Capitana! The La Capitana shipwreck (sunk in 1654 off Chanduy, Ecuador), is known to have many rare transitional types, as well as a vast majority of the coins found to be devalued with a counter stamp due to the improper weight of each coin minted during that time. This scandal turned into a huge ordeal, resulting in the execution of the mint director for his inaccurate weight of coins produced during those years. This 4 reales was devalued to being worth 3.75 reales due to it’s low/improper weight. A great coin with beautiful details!
