Description: A fantastic example of a 4 reales recovered from the wreck of the Capitana! The La Capitana shipwreck (sunk in 1654 off Chanduy, Ecuador), is known to have many rare transitional types, as well as a vast majority of the coins found to be devalued with a counter stamp due to the improper weight of each coin minted during that time. This scandal turned into a huge ordeal, resulting in the execution of the mint director for his inaccurate weight of coins produced during those years. This 4 reales was devalued to being worth 3.75 reales due to it’s low/improper weight. A great coin with beautiful details!
