Description: This beautiful 8 reales minted at the Potosi mint in 1652 was recovered from the shipwreck of the Capitana. Among other 8 reales recovered from this period off the shipwrecks, the “transitional coinage” from the early to mid 1600s are some of the most rare and desirable. This Piece of Eight was struck using the die variety known as the “E-8-E” style for the double assayer’s marks on either side of the pillars. With a wonderful and nearly complete obverse, clear details and date on the reverse, as well as the overall sea salvaged tone to the coin, this beautifully preserved 8 reales cob is a must have for any collector of Spanish shipwreck treasure!
