Description: This rare doubloon is a superb example of a Bogotá 2 escudos minted during the reign of King Carlos II. According to the PCGS database, this is not only the finest example graded, but also the only one, which makes this specimen quite unique.
This specimen displays on the obverse a complete Habsburg shield bathed in frosty gold luster, which you rarely see and the kings ordinal as a Roman numeral “II” at the 7 o’clock position next to the shield.
On the reverse, the coin displays a superbly struck and almost perfectly centered Jerusalem cross with ornate fleur-de-lis occupying the four cross quadrants. The overall eye appeal and original mint luster is superb on this coin and everything you would expect from a choice uncirculated macuquina that is over 325 years old!
NOTE: Under 10x magnification, you can see what appears to be remnants of coral encrustations in the devices of the Hapsburg shield on the obverse. This likely indicates that this coin was recovered from a shipwreck.
If you want to own a superb gold doubloon minted in Colombia, this specimen would fit perfectly into any Spanish Colonial gold collection.
