Description: This is a rare Spanish Colonial 8 reales silver cob, better known as a “Piece of Eight”. Spanish Colonial cobs are highly sought after, especially those minted in Mexico and this piece displays a very unusual shape. On the reverse, you can see a portion of the Jerusalem cross and one of the castles and  lions. On the obverse, you can see part of the Hapsburg shield and both sides show “chop marks”, which indicate that this cob found its way to Asia and back again.

When you turn the coin in the holder upside down, the shape of the cob almost looks like an old Dutch Onion bottle.

Because of the coin’s large and thick planchet, NGC had to place it in an extra large Jumbo size holder.

If you are a collector of Spanish Colonial coinage and treasure in general, this coin will make a great addition to your collection!
