Description: This rare doubloon is a superb example of a Bogotá 2 escudos minted during the reign of King Philip V. According to the PCGS database, there are 5 examples graded by PCGS in MS63, with only 3 examples finer.
This specimen displays on the obverse a partial Habsburg shield bathed in frosty gold luster.
On the reverse, the coin displays a superbly struck and well centered Jerusalem cross, with ornate fleur-de-lis occupying the four cross quadrants. The overall eye appeal and original mint luster is superb on this coin and everything you would expect from a choice uncirculated macuquina that is over 325 years old!
NOTE: Under 10x magnification, you can see what appears to be remnants of coral encrustations in the devices of the Hapsburg shield on the obverse. This likely indicates that this coin was recovered from a shipwreck, most likely pointing to the 1715 Fleet,
If you want to own a superb gold doubloon minted in Colombia, this specimen would fit perfectly into any Spanish Colonial gold collection.
