Description: This Mexico 8 reales is full weight, a fun and unique shape, and has a wonderful cross on it’s reverse. Struck during the reign of Philip V, many of this type of 8 reales were placed on ships bound for Spain. Many of those vessels never made it back as they were hit by Pirates, hurricanes or other means. A wonderful surviving example from the height of Spanish rule in the New World!

The Mexico City Mint, founded in 1535, was the first mint established in the Americas and quickly became one of the most important coin-producing centers of the Spanish Empire. Using silver and gold from New Spain’s rich mines, the mint struck vast quantities of coins—most famously the 8 reales, or “piece of eight,” which became a dominant global trade currency. Early issues were hand-struck cob coins, known for their crude shapes but trusted silver content, while later reforms introduced precision milled coinage. Coins from Mexico City circulated across Europe, the Americas, and Asia, playing a central role in international commerce. The mint’s long operation made it a cornerstone of colonial finance and a lasting symbol of Spain’s economic power in the New World.
