Description: A nice land find 1/2 real minted at the Lima mint. These desirable 1/2 reales from Lima often are missing the date, so finding one with a complete date is fantastic. The tone on the coin is consistent to examples found from metal detecting land finds. A great specimen!
The Lima Mint in 18th-century Peru was a vital hub of Spanish colonial wealth and coin production. Established in 1565 but flourishing during the 1700s, the mint produced vast quantities of silver and gold coins, including the famous cobs and later milled coins, using precious metals extracted from nearby mines like the legendary Cerro de Potosí. Coins from Lima were marked with the mintmark “L” or “LM” and often bore the image of the Spanish crown and pillars of Hercules. These coins circulated widely across the Spanish Empire and beyond, fueling global trade and becoming a cornerstone of colonial economic power.
