Description: This is an exceptional surviving example of a Mexico 4 reales recovered off the shipwreck sites of the 1715 Fleet. Mexico 4 reales recovered from the 1715 fleet rarely receive a straight numerical grade and this one just so happens to be the finest example graded by PCGS. In most cases, the silver coins recovered from the fleet have some form of environmental damage, cleaning, or other signs indicating they were sea salvaged. This piece however, somehow survived the heavy corrosion and should be considered a shipwreck coin unicorn.
The obverse displays a partial date, most of the crown and a good portion of the shield. The reverse displays a portion of the Jerusalem Cross and portions of the castles and lions.
The overall eye appeal is superb and the color on both sides is a beautiful gun metal silver. It is no wonder that this coin was part of the S.P. Rutherford Collection!
