Description: An absolutely exceptional shipwreck 8 reales from the 1733 Fleet! This coin was struck in 1732, and has evidence of a reused and modified die to cover over the die from 1731. Small deposits of horn silver from being underwater are visible on the surface, as well as signs of porosity. The mint and assayer’s marks are visible, as well as a nearly full cross. It is exceedingly rare to find an example like this from the 1733 Fleet wrecks in such nice condition, with most examples looking far from good. Own a piece of shipwreck history today!

The 1733 Spanish treasure fleet, consisting of over 20 ships, was struck by a devastating hurricane while sailing up the Florida Keys on July 15, 1733. The fleet had departed from Havana, Cuba, carrying silver, gold, jewels, and other goods bound for Spain. The storm drove most of the ships onto reefs and shoals along the Keys, wrecking them over a wide stretch from Islamorada to Marathon. Though many lives were lost, some survivors managed to reach shore, and Spanish salvagers quickly launched recovery operations. Despite these efforts, large amounts of treasure were never recovered and still lure modern treasure hunters today. The 1733 fleet remains one of the most famous colonial-era maritime disasters in the Americas.
