Description: One of the most spectacular shipwreck silver coins we have ever encountered! The pictures simply do not do this coin justice with how beautiful the surfaces are. Had this coin not spent centuries beneath the sea, it would be a mint state coin! Wonderful surfaces, strong strike and a bold look overall add to the beauty of this coin! This piece was recovered from the Dutch VOC wreck of the Vliegenthart and has been graded and preserved by NGC.
The Vliegenthart was a Dutch East India Company (VOC) merchant ship that sank in 1735 on the treacherous Goodwin Sands, off the coast of England. Built in 1729, the ship was on its maiden voyage from the Netherlands to Batavia (modern-day Jakarta) when it was caught in a severe storm and driven onto the shifting sandbanks, where it quickly broke apart. All hands were lost. The wreck lay buried for centuries until its rediscovery in the late 20th century. Archaeological investigations revealed cannons, ship fittings, and large quantities of silver coins—much of it private cargo illegally carried by crew members, a common practice despite VOC rules. Today, the Vliegenthart is protected as an important underwater cultural heritage site, offering valuable insight into 18th-century maritime trade, shipbuilding, and life aboard VOC vessels.
