Description: An excellent example off the wreck of the Rooswijk that sank in 1740. Great details present on both sides, with a crisp full date of 1736 on the obverse.
The Rooswijk was a Dutch East India Company (VOC) merchant ship that sank in January 1740 on the treacherous Goodwin Sands off the coast of Kent, England, during a storm. On only its second voyage to the East Indies, the ship was en route to Batavia (modern-day Jakarta) carrying a valuable cargo of silver bars and coins—much of it part of an officially sanctioned shipment, but also including privately smuggled wealth hidden by crew and officers seeking to profit in colonial trade. All 237 people aboard perished, and the wreck was quickly swallowed by sand. Rediscovered in 2004, the Rooswijk has since become a major archaeological site jointly overseen by the Dutch and British governments. Excavations beginning in 2016 uncovered thousands of silver coins, personal items, and artifacts that have provided rich insights into 18th-century maritime trade, smuggling, and life aboard VOC vessels.
