Description: A beautiful iron chest from the early to mid 1600s! This spectacular chest is wonderfully preserved, with very little to no rust across all surfaces. The escutcheon plate is clean and sharp, both hasps latching as intended, and the lid engages perfectly. The key turns and opens the chest with a little help by use of an iron bar or other leverage tool. The internal mechanism is stiff, making it difficult to open. This, however, is by design. In the time period, a small iron bar would slide through the bow of the key, and then turned to provide leverage. The escutcheon plate is etched with a fantastic motif of two eagle headed creatures, a feature we have not seen like this before.
