Description:
The “Coconut Wreck”, which sank off the coast of Bermuda around 1810, holds the distinction of being the deepest treasure shipwreck ever discovered, resting at an astounding depth of 16,300 feet. It was first located in 1999 during an expedition searching for the lost 1961 Liberty Bell space capsule. Salvage operations, aided by advanced submersibles, were carried out in 2001.
Also referred to as the “Piña Colada Wreck” and the “Atlantic Target Expedition Wreck,” the ship earned its nickname due to the large quantity of coconuts found in its cargo—an origin noted in the vessel’s initial sale in 2008. Among the remarkable artifacts recovered were 1,300 silver coins discovered inside a chest, and an ornate gold box containing 13 gold coins wrapped in a newspaper dated August 6, 1809, offering a haunting and tangible glimpse into the past.
