Description: This beautifully preserved and choice uncirculated 1885-S Liberty half eagle is graded by PCGS as Mint State 62. It is encapsulated in an old green holder (OGH) and boasts dazzling cartwheel luster, original peach toning, and superb eye appeal.
This U.S. gold type gold coin is part of a series of $5.00 Liberty head gold coins known as half eagles. This particular type was minted from 1866-1908 and this coin was struck at the mint in San Francisco. Its composition is made of 90% gold and 10% copper.
The obverse of the coin displays Christian Gobrecht’s portrait of Liberty wearing a crown with the word “LIBERTY” surrounded by 13 stars representing the original 13 colonies.
The reverse of the coin displays a heraldic eagle with a shield breastplate holding arrows and a branch in its claws. The eagle is centered in the design with the words “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA * FIVE D.” around the periphery and above the eagles head is a golden ribbon that says “IN GOD WE TRUST”.
This coin is a wonderful example of turn of the century U.S. gold and would make a fabulous addition to any U.S. gold type set.
