Description: This memorial half dollar was struck in commemoration of the Oregon trail and in memory of the pioneers, many of whom lie buried along the famous 2,000 mile highway of history. It is graded in an old PCGS holder as Mint State 65 and is definitely a premium quality gem specimen.

The obverse of the coin displays a Native American adorned in a headdress with his left hand stretched out towards the East and his right hand holding a bow. The Native American is portrayed standing over a map of the United States.

The reverse of the coin displays a covered wagon drawn by two oxen heading West into the sunset. Underneath the wagon are the words “OREGON TRAIL MEMORIAL”. Above the wagon reads “IN GOD WE TRUST”. Visible inside the wagon are two figures: an adult and a child.

The date side of the Oregon Trail commemorative was considered the obverse by the Mint even though the other side of the coin looks like it should be the obverse. In fact, the coin’s designers identified the date side as the reverse.

This coin is a wonderful example and would make a fabulous addition to any U.S. commemorative silver set.
