Description: This large chest is an exceptional specimen full dated 1715. The wood is likely pine, with signs of worm holes appropriate for the period and from Europe. The chest is structurally sound with few areas of significant wear. The iron fittings around the chest are intact, most of the nails are original with a few replacements done prior to our purchase. The interior has been lined with a unique paper that was used to line books in the 18th century, a luxurious feature we rarely come by. There has been added a small storage box within, likely at a later date, and appears to be mahogany. They iron key is original and works well inside the lock mechanism. On the lid, the initials “CDL” can be seen within the iron image of what appears to be a palm tree or pineapple. The iron shows signs of salt water corrosion in minimal areas, alluding to taken aboard a sea vessel for an extended period of time. A wonderful chest perfect for any collector.
