Description: This is a beautiful and rare example of a gold 4 escudos cob minted during the reign of King Philip IV!

The word doubloon comes from the Spanish word doblón, or “double”.  Doubloons were minted in one-half, one, two, four, and eight escudo denominations. They were made in a number of mints withing Spain, as well as the viceroyalties of the Spanish Colonies including Mexico, Peru, Bolivia, and Columbia.

On the obverse of this coin, you can clearly see most of the shield design, the “R” assayer mark, and “IIII”, which stands for the denomination being 4 escudos.  On the reverse, you see a beautifully struck Jerusalem cross with the unique design features at each quadrant.

As with most all hammered cob coins, no two coins look exactly the same. Four escudos in this quality are extremely difficult to find and without a doubt, a rare coin.

This specimen will make a perfect addition to any collection of Spanish Colonial cobs or pirate treasure!
