Description: Marcus Aurelius, 161 – 180 AD. Silver Denarius, Rome Mint, 19mm, 3.07 grams
Obverse: M ANTONINVS AVG ARM PARTH MAX, Laureate head of Marcus right.
Reverse: TR P XXII IMP IIII COS III, Providentia standing left holding scepter and pointing with hand to globe at feet.

This reverse type commemorates Rome’s victory in the Parthian War of AD 161-166. During the conflict, Lucius Verus, co-emperor with Marcus Aurelius, led Roman forces to devastating victories, including the sack of Seleucia on the Tigris and the Parthian capital, Ctesiphon. The destruction of Seleucia was so extensive that the once-great city never fully recovered, fading into obscurity within a few generations.
