Description: This beautifully toned choice uncirculated 1909 quarter eagle is graded by PCGS as Mint State 63. It boasts dazzling frosty mint luster, original peach and deep copper toning, with splashes of lavender. Given the eye appeal and lack of any major contact marks, it is our opinion that this specimen is conservatively graded and possibly a candidate for an upgrade. The photos don’t do this coin justice and when you hold it in your hand, it’s eye appeal is simply gorgeous.
This U.S. type coin is part of a series of $2.50 Indian head gold coins known as quarter eagles. This particular type was minted from 1908-1929 in San Francisco, Denver, and the Philadelphia mints, with this particular piece being struck in Philadelphia. Its composition is made of 90% gold and 10% copper.
The obverse of the coin displays a beautifully designed portrait of an American Indian chieftain struck incuse designed by sculptor Bela Lyon Pratt. The Indian’s portrait is surrounded by 13 stars (6 at the left and 7 at the right) representing the original 13 colonies and the word “LIBERTY” at the top. Below the portrait are the initials “B.L.P.”, which represent the initials of the designer.
The reverse of the coin displays a traditional American eagle struck incuse standing on a batch of arrows and holding a branch in one of its claws. The eagle is centered in the design with the words “UNITED . STATES . OF. AMERICA” at the top, “E PLURIBUS UNUM” to the left of the eagle and “IN GOD WE TRUST” to the right of the eagle. The denomination “2 1/2 . DOLLARS” is struck below the eagle.
$2.50 Indians that have superb eye appeal with original toning as this one does are highly sought after and considered much rarer than similar pieces without toning.
This coin is a wonderful example of U.S. gold and would make a fabulous addition to any U.S. gold type set.
