Description: This is a beautifully toned and uncirculated 1912 $5.00 Indian from the The Rive d’Or Hoard. The Rive d’Or Hoard is one of the largest collections of U.S. gold coins ever found. Also known as the Bank of Gold Hoard, the accumulation is one of the most famous gold coin treasures discovered in Europe. The hoard was mainly composed of various denominations of gold coins from the United States, but also included some from a number of other countries. The coins had sat undisturbed in a Paris bank vault and remained out of circulation until 2008, when the coins were rediscovered. The gold coins of the Rive d’Or collection are believed to have been accumulated by a wealthy merchant, financier, or banker who may have seen gold as a shelter from the instability and wars that swept across Europe in the 19th and early 20th centuries.
This U.S. type coin is part of a series of $5.00 Indian head gold coins known as half eagles. This particular type was minted from 1908-1929 in San Francisco, Denver, New Orleans, and the Philadelphia mints, with this particular piece being struck in Philadelphia. Its composition is made of 90% gold and 10% copper.
The obverse of the coin displays a beautifully designed portrait of an American Indian chieftain struck incuse designed by sculptor Bela Lyon Pratt. The Indian’s portrait is surrounded by 13 stars (6 at the left and 7 at the right) representing the original 13 colonies and the word “LIBERTY” at the top. Below the portrait are the initials “B.L.P.”, which represent the initials of the designer.
The reverse of the coin displays a traditional American eagle struck incuse standing on a batch of arrows and holding a branch in one of its claws. The eagle is centered in the design with the words “UNITED . STATES . OF. AMERICA” at the top, “E PLURIBUS UNUM” to the left of the eagle and “IN GOD WE TRUST” to the right of the eagle. The denomination “5 . DOLLARS” is struck below the eagle.
$5.00 Indians that have superb eye appeal with original toning as this one does are highly sought after and considered much rarer than similar pieces without toning.
This coin is a wonderful example of U.S. gold and would make a fabulous addition to any U.S. gold type set.
